Duck tales 360 - the lost key of tra-la-la

BRIEF

With the upcoming re-launch of the iconic DuckTales cartoon series, Disney approached Pebble Studios to make a mini episode in 360 to tease the show launch. At the time nobody had made a cartoon style 360 video, and we were stoked to approach the challenge.

Considering the complexity of the narrative and the very strict visual guidelines for the new DuckTales series, we opted to create 3D environments and composite 2D traditionally animated characters in to this. To ensure we achieved the exact look of the new series, I built a texturing workflow and custom shaders. I also modelled the Sunchaser, Scrooge’s and Glomgold’s cars, Scrooge’s money bin, and the lost temple of Tra-la-la.

The 360 episode received a fantastic reception on launch, with fans creating breakdown videos and blog posts praising it, all creating a huge buzz of anticipation for the launch of the show.

The DuckTails 360 episode went on to be nominated for several VR awards and won Best Use of 360 Video at the APA IDEAS awards in 2018.
